It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl and Waraqah bin Nawfal set out in search of the true religion until they reached a monk in Mosul. He said to Zayd bin Amr: "O owner of the camel, where have you come from?" He replied: "From the structure of Ibrahim (Makkah)." He asked: "What are you seeking?" He said: "I am in search of the true religion." The monk said: "Go back, for what you are seeking is about to appear in your own land." So Waraqah bin Nawfal entered Christianity, but Zayd says: Christianity was presented to me and it did not suit me. So he returned (to Makkah), and (near the Ka'bah) he would say: 'Labbayka haqqan haqqa, ta'abbudan wa riqqa, al-birra abghi la al-khal, wa hal tara muhajjiran ka-man qal: amantu bima amana bihi Ibrahim' (Here I am at Your service, a true and sincere response, in worship and servitude; I seek only Your pleasure and righteousness, not pride and grandeur. And do you consider one who leaves his home for the sake of Allah to be like one who (merely by tongue) said: I believe in what Ibrahim (peace be upon him) believed?) Then he would further say: 'Abghi laka Allahumma 'anin raghim, mahma tujashshimni fa-inni jashim' (O Allah, in humility and lowliness I seek You alone; whatever hardship You place upon me, I will gladly bear it). Then he would fall down and prostrate.
The narrator relates that Zayd's son (Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him)) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, my father's condition was as you saw and as reached you about him; shall I seek forgiveness for him?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, for on the Day of Resurrection he will be raised as a whole nation by himself."
And (it once happened that) Zayd bin Amr met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the two of them were eating from their dining cloth. They invited Zayd bin Amr to their food, but Zayd bin Amr said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "We do not eat what (meat) has been slaughtered on the stone altars (of idols)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection he will be raised as a nation by himself, belonging to the period between me and Isa (peace be upon him)." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about Waraqah bin Nawfal, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I saw him in the middle of Paradise, wearing fine silk."
Isma'il refers to Ibn Mujalid, and Yahya bin Sa'id al-Umawi corroborated him.
Imam al-Bazzar narrated this hadith; Mujalid is alone in narrating it, and there is weakness in him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him): I once went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on one of the intensely hot days of Makkah; he (peace and blessings be upon him) had seated me behind him on his mount, and we were heading towards one of the idols (an altar). We had slaughtered a goat for it and cooked it well. He relates: On the way he (peace and blessings be upon him) met Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl, and each of them greeted the other with the customary greeting of the Jahiliyyah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Zayd, what is the matter? I see that your people are greatly displeased and resentful towards you." He said: "By Allah, O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), this resentment of theirs is not due to the lack of any benefit reaching them from me; rather, I went out in search of this true religion until I came to the Jewish scholars of Fadak, and I saw that they worship Allah but also associate partners with Him. So I said to myself: This is not what I am seeking."
"Then an old scholar among them said to me: 'You are asking about a religion by which we know of no one who worships Allah Almighty at this time, except an aged elder living at al-Hirah.' So I set out from there and reached him. When he saw me, he asked: 'Where are you from?' I said: 'I am from the people of the House of Allah (Makkah), and from the land of thorny shrubs and acacia (qaraz).' He said: 'The one you are seeking has appeared in your own land; a Prophet has been sent whose star has risen, and all those you saw there are in misguidance.' (Zayd bin Amr said:) O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), since then I have not yet perceived anything in particular."
The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought the dining cloth near to him, and he asked: "What is this?" (Zayd bin Harithah) says: We said: "This is a goat which we slaughtered for an idol." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will not eat anything over which the name of Allah has not been mentioned."
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the House of Allah and performed tawaf around it, and I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him); then he performed the sa'i between Safa and Marwah. At that time there were two idols made of copper near Safa and Marwah, one of which was called "Isaf" and the other "Na'ilah", and when the polytheists performed tawaf they would wipe their hands on them for blessing, that is, touch them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) emphatically told me: "Do not touch them at all, for they are filth and impurity." I thought to myself: I will certainly touch them, to see what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says. So I touched them. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in rebuke: "O Zayd, were you not forbidden?"
The narrator says: Then Zayd bin Amr passed away, and revelation descended upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said about Zayd: "Indeed, he will be raised as a whole nation by himself."
