قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، ثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، قَالَ : إِنَّ عُمَرَ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ - قَالَ : لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ : سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ الْآيَةَ ، فَجَعَلْتُ أَقُولُ : أَيُّ جَمْعٍ يُهْزَمُ ؟ فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ بَدْرٍ ، وَرَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَثِبُ فِي الدِّرْعِ ، وَيَقُولُ : سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ ; فَعَرَفْتُ أَنَّهُ هُوَ .
3735 \ 2 - قَالَ مَعْمَرٌ : فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَيُّوبُ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ مِثْلَهُ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "When this blessed verse was revealed: 'The assembly will soon be defeated, and they will turn their backs' [Surah al-Qamar: 45], I kept saying (in wonder): Which band or army is it that will be defeated? Then, when the day of the Battle of Badr came and I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) leaping (with fervour) wearing armour, these very words were on his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed tongue: 'Soon this band will be defeated, and they will turn their backs and flee.' At that moment I realised that this day was the true fulfilment of the verse."
Ma'mar said: Ayyub also narrated the like of it to me by way of Ikrimah.

وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَاصِمٍ ، ثَنَا دَاوُدُ ابْنُ أَبِي هِنْدٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ ابْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا - ، فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى : اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ وَانْشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ - قَالَ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ - : مَضَى انْشِقَاقُ الْقَمَرِ بِمَكَّةَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding this statement of Allah Almighty: "The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split" [Surah al-Qamar: 1], that he said: "The miracle of the splitting of the moon has already taken place in Makkah."
The chain of this report contains Ali bin Asim al-Wasiti, whose memory the hadith scholars have criticised; however, the occurrence of the splitting of the moon in Makkah is established by other authentic and mutawatir hadith. Imam Ahmad bin Mani' related it in his Musnad.

وَبِهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا - : سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ - قَالَ : يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding this statement of Allah Almighty: "Soon this (disbelievers') band will be defeated, and they will turn their backs and flee" [Surah al-Qamar: 45], that he said: "What is meant by this (the fulfilment of the prophecy) is the day of the Battle of Badr."
Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded this hadith in his Sahih (no. 4875), and it is authentic in its chain.

وَفِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى : فَسَوْفَ يَكُونُ لِزَامًا قَالَ : يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said concerning this statement of Allah Almighty: "So it will be inevitable" [Surah al-Furqan: 77]: "This (seizure and punishment) refers to the Day of Badr (the day of the Battle of Badr)."
