It is narrated from Abu al-Aliyah (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) built an upper chamber (room), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him (encouraging him to abstinence and contentment): "Demolish it." He said (as an alternative): (O Messenger of Allah!) Shall I give its value in charity instead? So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the same three times (emphatically): "Demolish it."
This narration is reported in Musnad al-Tayalisi (3268); since Abu al-Aliyah's hearing from Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) is not established, it is munqati' (broken), although all its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy) and reliable.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on one side of the houses of the Ansar when he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed head and saw a domed structure that had been built (a tall dome-like building). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Anas! To whom does this dome belong?" I said: It belongs to so-and-so. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection every building will be a burden upon its owner, except a building that is only as much as is needed and unavoidable." So when that Ansari Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) came to know of this, he pulled it down and demolished it. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by there again and did not find it there, he asked: "O Anas! What happened to that dome?" I said: Your blessed words reached its owner, so he demolished it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him), supplicating for him, said: 'Ghafara Allahu lahu' "May Allah Almighty forgive him."
Imam Abu Dawud has also narrated this hadith. Although there is criticism of Muhammad bin Abi Zakariyya in its chain, its meaning is supported by other blessed hadith: that buildings made merely for pride and boasting are disliked.
