قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : قُلْتُ لِأَبِي أُسَامَةَ : أَحَدَّثَكُمْ مِسْعَرٌ قَالَ : أَخْرَجَ إِلَيَّ مَعْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ كِتَابًا فَحَلَفَ لِي أَنَّهُ خَطُّ أَبِيهِ ، فَإِذَا فِيهِ : قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ : وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا كَانَ أَشَدَّ خَوْفًا عَلَى الْمُتَنَطِّعِينَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَلَا بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ أَشَدَّ خَوْفًا مِنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، وَإِنِّي لَأَرَى عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ كَانَ أَشَدَّ خَوْفًا عَلَيْهِمْ أَوْ لَهُمْ . ؟
فَأَقَرَّ بِهِ أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، وَقَالَ : نَعَمْ .
3265 \ 2 - وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ بِهِ .
3265 \ 3 - وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، بِهِ .
فَأَقَرَّ بِهِ أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، وَقَالَ : نَعَمْ .

Ishaq relates that he asked Abu Usamah: Did Mis'ar narrate this hadith to you? He related that Ma'n bin Abd al-Rahman showed me a piece of writing and swore that it was in the handwriting of his father (Abd al-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Mas'ud), and in it was written that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'Wa alladhi la ilaha ghayruhu' "By the One besides whom there is no true god! I have not seen anyone more concerned and fearful about the outcome of those who go to extremes and split hairs (al-mutanatti'in) than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) there was no one more fearful concerning them than Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and I think that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was the most fearful for them or of their trial."
At this Abu Usamah confirmed it, saying: Yes! Imam Abu Bakr and Imam Abu Ya'la also narrated it from Abu Usamah, each with his own chain.

وَقَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَعُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى قَالَا : ثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ عُبَيْدَةَ الرَّبَذِيُّ ، عَنْ أَخِيهِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ نُقْرِئُ بَعْضُنَا بَعْضًا ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ كِتَابُ اللهِ وَاحِدٌ ، فِيكُمُ الْأَحْمَرُ وَالْأَسْوَدُ ، اقْرَؤُوا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ قَوْمٌ يُقِيمُونَ حُرُوفَهُ كَمَا يُقَامُ السَّهْمُ يَتَعَجَّلُونَهُ وَلَا يَتَأَجَّلُونَهُ " .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us while we were teaching one another to recite the Qur'an, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah). The Book of Allah is one, while among you are the red and the black (people of every colour and race). Recite (the Qur'an)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times, then said: "before there come a people who will straighten its letters (outwardly) and make them correct just as an arrow is straightened; they will hasten (its worldly fruits) and will not defer it (for the reward of the Hereafter)."

وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ ، ثَنَا أَبُو مَعْشَرٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ لِهَذَا الْقُرْآنِ شِرَّةً ، ثُمَّ لِلنَّاسِ عَنْهُ فَتْرَةٌ ، فَمَنْ كَانَتْ فَتْرَتُهُ إِلَى الْقَصْدِ فَنِعْمَ مَا هُوَ ، وَمَنْ كَانَتْ فَتْرَتُهُ إِلَى الْإِعْرَاضِ فَأُولَئِكَ بُورٌ " .
3267 \ 2 - وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ ، ثَنَا أَبُو مَعْشَرٍ ، بِهَذَا .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, for this Qur'an (its learning and recitation) there is a special zeal and fervour, then a period of slackness and weariness comes upon people regarding it. So whoever's slackness (stays within the bounds of balance and) inclines towards moderation, how excellent he is; and whoever's slackness leads him to turning away and aversion (from the truth), then such people are the ones who are ruined and destroyed."
Imam Abu Bakr and Imam Abu Ya'la narrated it, each with his own chain, from Abu Ma'shar, from Sa'id, from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
