Beware of the trial of wealth and abundant riches

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) called me. When I arrived, I saw that a leather mat was spread before him on which gold was scattered just as "al-hatha" (chaff) is scattered. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: By "al-hatha" is meant dry straw or chaff. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "Come near and distribute this among your people. Allah Almighty knows best whether, when He withheld this wealth from His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and from Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), He intended good for them, or whether (now, by giving it to me) some evil is hidden in it for me." After that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep bitterly, and between his sobs he was saying: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! Allah Almighty did not withhold this wealth from His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and from Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) out of any intention of evil for them, nor has He given this wealth to me out of any special intention of good for me (rather, it is a trial)."
This hadith is hasan (good); al-Haytham bin Kulayb al-Shashi recorded it in his Musnad.
In another chain, Zuhayr bin Hayyan, who used to attend the gatherings of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and heard from him, relates: I heard Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) saying: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called me, and then he mentioned the same incident as before.
The narrators of this report are narrators of Imam Muslim except Zuhayr, and he is not criticised (ghayr majruh).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I fear for you the trial of prosperity and comfort more than the trial of hardship and adversity. You were indeed tested with the trial of hardship and you were patient through it, and (remember that) this world is very green and sweet."
Imam Ishaq and Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it, each with his own chain, from Jarir.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) visited Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was ill, and he brought out some heaps of dates before him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Bilal, what is this?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, these are dates that I have stored (for future need). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not fear that you will feel its smoke and heat in Hell? O Bilal, spend (in the way of Allah), and never fear poverty and want from the Lord of the Throne (Allah Almighty)."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith in his Musnad, and Allamah al-Haythami declared all its narrators thiqat (trustworthy) in Majma' al-Zawa'id.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has little wealth and many dependants (people under his care), whose prayer is excellent (and full of humility and devotion), and who does not backbite the Muslims, will come on the Day of Resurrection in such a state that he will be with me like these two (fingers, close together)."
In the chain of this hadith, the narrator Maslamah bin Ali al-Khushani is severely weak and matruk (abandoned), because of which this report is weak in its chain. Imam al-Bayhaqi recorded it in Shu'ab al-Iman (10300).

It is narrated from a man of Banu Abs that he said: I was with Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him). He related a story and, mentioning the treasures of Chosroes, said: "Indeed, the One who granted you this wealth, bestowed these blessings upon you and opened these conquests for you, is the very One who was withholding these treasures while Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was alive. In those days the people were in such a state that they would wake up in the morning having neither a dinar, nor a dirham, nor even a mudd (a measure) of food. So, O brother of Banu Abs, what is all this for?" Then we passed by threshing floors where grain was being winnowed, and he said again: "Indeed, the Allah who granted you all this, made you its owners and opened conquests for you, is the very One who was withholding these treasures while Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was alive. Then the Companions would wake up in the morning without even a mudd of food. So, O brother of Banu Abs, what is all this for?"
Sunan Ibn Majah: 4150; Allamah al-Albani declared it sahih (authentic).
