قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ : بَيْنَمَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا جَالِسٌ وَعِنْدَهُ أَصْحَابٌ لَهُ يُحَدِّثُهُمْ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ : لَا تُحَدِّثْنَا إِلَّا بِالْقُرْآنِ أَوْ لَا نُرِيدُ إِلَّا الْقُرْآنَ ، فَقَالَ : أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ وُكِلْتَ أَنْتَ وَأَصْحَابُكَ إِلَى الْقُرْآنِ أَكُنْتَ تَجِدُ صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ أَرْبَعًا ، وَصَلَاةَ الْعَصْرِ أَرْبَعًا ، وَصَلَاةَ الْمَغْرِبِ ثَلَاثًا ، يُقْرَأُ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الْأُولَيَيْنِ ؟ أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ وُكِلْتَ أَنْتَ وَأَصْحَابُكَ إِلَى الْقُرْآنِ أَكُنْتَ تَجِدُ فِي كُلِّ مِائَتَيْنِ خَمْسَةً ، وَفِي الْإِبِلِ كَذَا وَكَذَا ، وَفِي الْبَقَرِ كَذَا وَكَذَا ؟ أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ وُكِلْتَ أَنْتَ وَأَصْحَابُكَ إِلَى الْقُرْآنِ أَكُنْتُ تَجِدُ الطَّوَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ سَبْعًا ، وَبَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ كَذَا وَكَذَا .
It is narrated from Imam al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was once sitting, and some of his companions were with him to whom he was narrating hadith, when a man spoke up: "Narrate to us only the Qur'an," or he said: "We want only the Qur'an." At this Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What do you think? If you and your companions were left to the Qur'an alone, would you find in the Qur'an that Zuhr has four rak'ahs, Asr has four rak'ahs, and Maghrib has three rak'ahs, in the first two of which recitation is made? Tell me! If you and your companions were left to the Qur'an alone, would you find in it the detail that on every two hundred (dirhams) five (dirhams of zakah) is due, and that for camels it is such and such, and for cattle it is such and such? Just tell me! If you and your companions were left to the mercy of the Qur'an alone, would you be able to learn from the Qur'an that the circumambulation (tawaf) of the House consists of seven circuits, and that (the sa'i) between Safa and Marwah is such and such?"

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ ، ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ ، ثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ الرَّقَاشِيِّ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : عَسَى أَنْ يُكَذِّبَنِي رَجُلٌ وَهُوَ مُتَّكِئٌ عَلَى أَرِيكَتِهِ يَبْلُغُهُ الْحَدِيثُ عَنِّي فَيَقُولُ : مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَعْ هَذَا وَهَاتِ مَا فِي الْقُرْآنِ .
قَالَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ : فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهِ عَمْرَو بْنَ عُبَيْدٍ فَقَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ . قُلْتُ : فَانْطَلِقْ بِنَا إِلَى الْحَسَنِ ، فَأَتَيْنَا الْحَسَنَ فَسَأَلْنَاهُ عَنِ الْحَدِيثِ فَقَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ الرَّقَاشِيُّ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ .
قَالَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ : فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهِ عَمْرَو بْنَ عُبَيْدٍ فَقَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ . قُلْتُ : فَانْطَلِقْ بِنَا إِلَى الْحَسَنِ ، فَأَتَيْنَا الْحَسَنَ فَسَأَلْنَاهُ عَنِ الْحَدِيثِ فَقَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ الرَّقَاشِيُّ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It may well happen soon that a man is sitting reclining on his adorned couch or comfortable seat, and a hadith of mine reaches him, and he belies me and says: 'What has the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said? Leave this, and bring what is in the Qur'an.'"
Isma'il relates: I narrated this hadith to Amr bin Ubayd, and he said: "Imam al-Hasan al-Basri narrated it to us from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him)." I said to him: "Then come with us to al-Hasan al-Basri." So we went to al-Hasan al-Basri and asked him about this hadith, and he said: "Yazid al-Raqashi narrated this hadith to me through Muhammad bin al-Munkadir from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him)."
