It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn (may Allah have mercy on him) that while Ubayd bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) was narrating hadith, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was sitting with him, Ubayd said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The hypocrite is like a sheep (bewildered) between two flocks or folds (rabadayn): when it comes to these, they butt it and drive it away, and when it goes to the others, they butt it." Then Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said (correcting the wording): "It is not like that; rather, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the words 'bayna ghanamayn' (between two flocks)." At this Ubayd bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "'Bayna rabadayn' and 'ghanamayn' have one and the same meaning." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said (making clear the importance of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) exact words): "Had I not heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) myself saying it (with the word ghanamayn), I would never have said this."
Imam Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded this hadith in his Musnad. This report shows the utmost caution and technical precision of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) in transmitting the words of hadith exactly as they were.

Yazid bin Abi Malik, Rabi'ah bin Yazid and Makhul relate that whenever Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a blessed hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would say (out of utmost caution): "(The matter) is like this, or similar and close to it."
Abu Ya'la recorded it through the chain of Ahmad bin Ishaq al-Bahili, from Ibn Dawud, from Asim bin Raja bin Haywah.
Abu Abdullah al-Muqaddami also narrated it through Abdullah bin Dawud with the same chain mentioned above.
Furthermore, Muhammad bin Qudamah also transmitted it from Rabi'ah bin Yazid through Ma'n bin Isa and Mu'awiyah bin Salih.

It is narrated from a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever attributes to me something I did not say, or makes a (false) claim, or ascribes himself to other than his (freeing) masters, let him take his seat between the two eyes of Hell." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, does Hell have two eyes?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes. Have you not heard the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: 'When it sees them from a distant place, they will hear its raging and roaring' [Surah al-Furqan: 12]?"
The narrator says: Then we stopped narrating hadith (out of fear of this warning), until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed his displeasure at this conduct of ours and asked us: "What is the matter, that I do not hear you narrating hadith?" We said: "O Messenger of Allah, how can we narrate hadith when you have stated the warning you have stated? And we do not preserve the hadith (word for word); sometimes we put a word before and sometimes after, and sometimes there is addition or omission in it." At this he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I did not mean those (human errors); rather, I spoke about the one who intends to find fault with me and to disfigure Islam."
