It is narrated from Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man said in the presence of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) (definitively about himself): "Indeed, I am a believer." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him (taking him to task for this claim): "(If your claim is correct) then also say: 'Indeed, I am in Paradise'" (that is, if you are so certain of the perfection of your faith and its outcome, then also declare definitively that you are of the people of Paradise). The man said (in explanation): "I believe in Allah Almighty, His angels, His Books and His Messengers."
This report is sahih (authentic), and Ahmad bin Mani' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it; it points to the cautious approach of the Companions regarding faith.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "What I fear and dread most for you is a person's being pleased with his own opinion and falling into self-conceit. Whoever says (out of arrogance and pride): 'I am a scholar', is in reality ignorant; and whoever claims: 'Indeed, I am of the people of Paradise', is (because of this conceit of the self) of the people of Hell."
This report is found in Musnad al-Harith (Bughyat al-Bahith); its chain contains Musa bin Ubaydah al-Rabadhi, a da'if (weak) narrator; however, its meaning is established by other authentic hadiths and reports that have come in condemnation of self-conceit and arrogance.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Whoever claims that he is a (perfect) believer is a disbeliever; whoever holds the notion that he is of the people of Paradise is of the people of Hell; and whoever supposes that he is a great scholar is ignorant." The narrator said: A man argued with him and said: "Even if you people take away power and rule (on account of your leadership), Paradise is still ours." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever claims that he is of the people of Paradise is of the people of Hell.'"
Musnad al-Harith: 3018. The chain of this narration is munqati' (broken), because Qatadah's hearing from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) is not established.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A person's faith is not complete until he makes an exception (by saying in sha' Allah) in everything he says", or he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "in all his speech."
Ahmad bin Mani' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it in his Musnad; however, according to the hadith scholars there is weakness in its chain because of narrators such as Abdullah bin Sa'id bin Abi Sa'id al-Maqburi and Ma'arik bin Abbad.
