It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn al-Adra' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: One night I was guarding the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I stood up, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) took my hand and leaned on it. Then we passed by a man who was praying in the mosque in a loud voice, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps he is one who shows off (in worship)." I said: O Messenger of Allah! He is praying (with utmost humility) and supplicating. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) let go of my hand and said: "You will never attain this matter (the religion) by striving to overpower (one another), or (he said) by harshness." The narrator said: Then we went out on another night and passed by a man who was praying in a loud voice, and I said (drawing an analogy from the earlier incident): O Messenger of Allah! Perhaps he is one who shows off. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather he is awwah (that is, one who weeps much and humbly implores before Allah)." The narrator said: That man was Sayyiduna Abdullah Dhu al-Bijadayn (may Allah be pleased with him), and the other was a Bedouin (a desert Arab).
This chain is hasan (good).
And Imam Abu Ya'la (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Musayyibi narrated to us, from Sulayman bin Dawud, from Dawud bin Qays, from Zayd bin Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him), a similar hadith.

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) of the tribe of Aslam that there were three men among us who kept the company of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Buraydah, Mihjan and Sukbah (may Allah be pleased with them). Sayyiduna Mihjan said to Sayyiduna Buraydah: "Do you not pray the way Sukbah prays (with such fervour)?" He replied: "No, (I do not do so, because) I remember that I was returning with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from Uhud, and we were walking together with my hand in his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed hand. Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man praying (with great elaboration), and he asked: 'Do you consider him to be striving hard (in worship)? Do you consider him truthful (in his claim)?' At that I began to praise and commend that man, but when we came close to him, he (peace and blessings be upon him) pulled his hand away from mine and said: 'Woe to you! Be silent; do not let him hear (this praise of yours), or you will destroy him. Indeed, the best of your religion is what is easiest (and based on moderation).'"
Imam Musaddad recorded it in his Musnad; its chain contains an unnamed narrator, yet its basis is established by other supporting reports.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people and said: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has given everyone who has a right his right. Indeed, Allah Almighty has laid down obligations, established Sunnahs (ways), set limits, made the lawful permissible and the unlawful forbidden; and He has legislated Islam as a religion and made it very easy, spacious and broad, and He has not placed any kind of hardship in it. O people! Know that there is no (complete) faith for the one who has no trustworthiness, and no religion for the one who does not keep his covenant. Whoever breaks the covenant of Allah Almighty, Allah will call him to account; and whoever violates my covenant and pledge, I will be his opponent (on the Day of Resurrection), and whomever I oppose, I will prevail over him with my decisive proof. Whoever breaks my covenant will not attain my intercession, nor will he come to me at my Pond. Beware! Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has not permitted the killing of anyone except in three cases: one who apostatises after having believed, one who commits adultery after being married, or the killer of a soul, who is killed (in retaliation) for it." (Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) entreated:) 'Allahumma hal ballaghtu' (O Allah, have I conveyed (Your message)?)
Imam Musaddad and Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains the narrator Husayn bin Qays, who is matruk (abandoned) and da'if (weak), though the meanings of the hadith are established by other authentic texts.
