Slaughter of an animal that cannot be slaughtered normally

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: A cow of ours became wild (bolted and became unruly). A man went out and struck it (with a sharp weapon) on the lower part of its neck, above the joint of the shoulder, and it immediately fell down drenched in its own blood. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about it (whether it was lawful), and he said: "When a domestic cow takes the place of a wild animal (that is, goes out of control), then what makes the wild animal lawful makes it lawful (that is, emergency slaughter by striking it)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: In the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we bought a cow so that we could share in it (for sacrifice or for its meat), but it broke loose from us, ran off, and could not be brought under control. A freed slave of ours named Dhakwan went after it with a sword in his hand while it was circling around the hillocks and the open land. He went up onto a high mound, and when the cow passed by him, he struck it with the sword at the base of its neck or on its shoulder, wounding it with the sword and bringing it down, and we were not able to slaughter it (alive). Then I and Abdullah bin Thabit bin al-Jidh' (may Allah be pleased with him) went out and met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we mentioned the matter to him. He said: "Eat (it). And whatever animal of these livestock escapes from your control, bring it under control (or restrain it) by the same means with which you restrain wild animals."
