وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ ، ثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى ، ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ حَرَامِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ ، عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْجَمُوحِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : ابْتَعْنَا بَقَرَةً فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِنَشْتَرِكَ عَلَيْهَا ، فَانْفَلَتَتْ مِنَّا فَامْتَنَعَتْ عَلَيْنَا ، فَتَعَرَّضَ لَهَا مَوْلًى لَنَا يُقَالُ لَهُ : [ ذَكْوَانُ ] بِسَيْفٍ فِي يَدِهِ وَهِيَ تَجُولُ بِالصِّمَادِ ، فَصَبَا إِلَى تَلٍّ فَلَمَّا مَرَّتْ بِهِ ضَرَبَهَا بِالسَّيْفِ فِي أَصْلِ عُنُقِهَا أَوْ عَلَى عَاتِقِهَا فَخَرَقَهَا بِالسَّيْفِ وَوَقَعَتْ فَلَمْ نُدْرِكْ ذَكَاتَهَا فَخَرَجْتُ أَنَا وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ ثَابِتِ بْنِ الْجِذْعِ فَلَقِيَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَذَكَرْنَا لَهُ شَأْنَهَا ، فَقَالَ : كُلُوا ، إِذَا فَاتَكُمْ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْبَهَائِمِ شَيْءٌ فَاحْبِسُوهُ بِمَا تَحْبِسُونَ بِهِ الْوَحْشَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: In the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we bought a cow so that we could share in it (for sacrifice or for its meat), but it broke loose from us, ran off, and could not be brought under control. A freed slave of ours named Dhakwan went after it with a sword in his hand while it was circling around the hillocks and the open land. He went up onto a high mound, and when the cow passed by him, he struck it with the sword at the base of its neck or on its shoulder, wounding it with the sword and bringing it down, and we were not able to slaughter it (alive). Then I and Abdullah bin Thabit bin al-Jidh' (may Allah be pleased with him) went out and met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we mentioned the matter to him. He said: "Eat (it). And whatever animal of these livestock escapes from your control, bring it under control (or restrain it) by the same means with which you restrain wild animals."
