Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) came in with his son Muhammad, and he (Muhammad) was wearing a silk shirt. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, seized him by the collar and tore it. At this Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'Ghafarallahu laka' "May Allah forgive you! You have frightened the boy and shaken his heart." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do you clothe them in silk?" Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I myself wear silk, and these (children) are just like you."

Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about an abundance of lice and said: "O Messenger of Allah, will you permit me to wear a silk shirt?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him permission. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had passed away and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became caliph, one day Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) with his son and Abu Salamah, and he was wearing a silk shirt. Seeing it, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What is this?" Then he put his hand into the collar of the shirt and tore it down to the bottom. Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made it lawful for me?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) made it lawful for you only because you complained of lice; as for others, it is not lawful for them."
