It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched a sariyyah (military detachment), and to assess their knowledge he had them recite the Qur'an. First an elderly man recited, then a young man recited, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed that young man as their commander. At this the elder said: "Have you appointed him as commander over me, though I am older than him in age?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, he knows more of the Noble Qur'an than you."
Ahmad bin Mani' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it in his Musnad.

It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla (may Allah have mercy on him): "I set out with Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) for Makkah, and the governor of Makkah, Nafi' bin Alqamah, came out to receive us; he had been named Nafi' after one of his paternal uncles. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: 'Whom have you appointed as your deputy over the people of Makkah?' He said: 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abza.' He said: 'You chose a freed slave (mawla) and made him your deputy over the Quraysh and the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who are there?' He replied: 'Yes, I found him the best reciter of the Book of Allah, and Makkah is a place where people come and gather, so I wanted them to hear the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, from a man with a beautiful recitation.' At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'What an excellent decision you made! Indeed, Abd al-Rahman bin Abza is among those whom Allah Almighty raises through this Qur'an.'"
Its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), but there is a reservation about this chain, because Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla was too young (in age) at that time for this incident.
Imam Muslim narrated it through Imam al-Zuhri, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), in a different wording, in which the story is given in meaning; and in it (the governor of Makkah) is named Nafi' bin al-Harith al-Khuza'i, and this is the mahfuz (preserved, correct) version.
