A narration with a similar meaning has already passed before this. It is narrated from Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) delayed the departure (from Muzdalifah towards Mina) until it had become well light, whereupon Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said (by way of warning): "Is it the rising of the sun that is being waited for? Do these people still want to act according to the practice of the people of Jahiliyyah?" Then Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) departed from there and the people set off with him, after which Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) also set off.
This report (athar) is sahih (authentic) in its chain and mawquf (stopping at the Companion); however, since it contains an explanation of the procedure of the Prophetic Sunnah, it will be regarded as having the ruling of a marfu' hadith (one attributed to the Prophet).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the people of the Jahiliyyah used to stand in the plain of Arafat, and when the sun reached the mountain tops as though it were turbans on the heads of men, they would set off from there. Then they would stay at Muzdalifah, and when (the next day) the sun began to shine on the mountain tops, they would depart from there. But when the era of Islam came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the departure from Arafat until the sun had set, while he hastened the departure from Muzdalifah. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) set off from there when, after daybreak, at the last time, everything had become well lit, although he (peace and blessings be upon him) had offered the Fajr prayer there in the darkness at the beginning of its time (ghalas).
Imam Ahmad narrated this hadith in abridged form through the chain of Imam Abu Dawud, on the authority of Zam'ah.
