It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the people of the Jahiliyyah used to stand in the plain of Arafat, and when the sun reached the mountain tops as though it were turbans on the heads of men, they would set off from there. Then they would stay at Muzdalifah, and when (the next day) the sun began to shine on the mountain tops, they would depart from there. But when the era of Islam came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the departure from Arafat until the sun had set, while he hastened the departure from Muzdalifah. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) set off from there when, after daybreak, at the last time, everything had become well lit, although he (peace and blessings be upon him) had offered the Fajr prayer there in the darkness at the beginning of its time (ghalas).
Imam Ahmad narrated this hadith in abridged form through the chain of Imam Abu Dawud, on the authority of Zam'ah.
