بَابُ فَضْلِ صَوْمِ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ إِلَّا بِعَرَفَةَ

قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَفْصٍ الطَّائِفِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَنْ صَامَ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ غُفِرَ لَهُ سَنَتَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَتَيْنِ .
1090 \ 2 - رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ غَنَّامٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ . وَعَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيِّ ، وَعَبْدَانَ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ ، قَالَا : ثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، ثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ ، مِثْلَهُ .
1090 \ 3 - وَرَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : ثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ .
1090 \ 2 - رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ غَنَّامٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ . وَعَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيِّ ، وَعَبْدَانَ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ ، قَالَا : ثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، ثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ ، مِثْلَهُ .
1090 \ 3 - وَرَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : ثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts on the day of Arafah, the sins of two consecutive years will be forgiven for him."
Imam al-Tabarani narrated this hadith through Ubayd bin Ghannam from Imam Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah; also, al-Husayn bin Ishaq al-Tustari and Abdan bin Ahmad recorded it through the chain of Uthman bin Abi Shaybah from Mu'awiyah bin Hisham with the same text; and Imam Abu Ya'la also narrated it through the chain of Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah.

وَقَالَ عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، أَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي فَرْوَةَ ، عَنْ عِيَاضٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، رَفَعَهُ : مَنْ صَامَ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ غُفِرَ لَهُ سَنَتَيْنِ ، سَنَةً قَبْلَهُ وَسَنَةً بَعْدَهُ .
رَوَاهُ ابْنُ مَاجَهْ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ ، فَزَادَ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ .
وَإِسْحَاقُ ضَعِيفٌ جِدًّا .
رَوَاهُ ابْنُ مَاجَهْ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ ، فَزَادَ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ .
وَإِسْحَاقُ ضَعِيفٌ جِدًّا .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), in a marfu' report, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts the day of Arafah, his sins of two years will be forgiven: one of the year before it and one of the year after it."
Imam Ibn Majah also narrated it through this same chain, except that in his narration Qatadah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) is added after Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator of this chain, Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abi Farwah, is very weak.

وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ ، ثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ ، حَدَّثَتْنِي نَدَبَةُ ، قَالَتْ : سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، يَقُولُ : مَنْ صَحِبَنِي مِنْ ذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَى ، فَلَا يَصُومَنَّ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ ; فَإِنَّهُ يَوْمُ أَكْلٍ وَشُرْبٍ وَذِكْرِ اللهِ تَعَالَى .
Nadabah (may Allah have mercy on her) narrates that she heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: "Whoever joins me in Hajj, whether man or woman, must by no means fast on the day of Arafah, for it is a day of eating, drinking and the remembrance of Allah Almighty."
وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ أَبُو قُدَامَةَ ، عَنْ هُودِ بْنِ شِهَابِ بْنِ عَبَّادٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، قَالَ : مَرَّ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَلَى أَبْيَاتٍ بِعَرَفَاتٍ ، فَقَالَ : لِمَنْ هَذِهِ الْأَبْيَاتُ ؟ قُلْنَا : لِعَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ خَيْرًا ، وَنَهَاهُمْ عَنْ صَوْمِ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ .
قَالَ : وَحَجَّ أَبِي ، وَطَلِيقُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْخُزَاعِيُّ ، فَاخْتَلَفَا فِي صَوْمِ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ ، فَقَالَ أَبِي : بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، فَأَتَيَاهُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ ، اخْتَلَفْنَا فِي صَوْمِ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ ، فَجَعَلْنَاكَ بَيْنَنَا ، فَقَالَ : أُخْبِرُكُمْ عَمَّنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ لَا يَصُومُهُ .
قَالَ : وَحَجَّ أَبِي ، وَطَلِيقُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْخُزَاعِيُّ ، فَاخْتَلَفَا فِي صَوْمِ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ ، فَقَالَ أَبِي : بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، فَأَتَيَاهُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ ، اخْتَلَفْنَا فِي صَوْمِ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ ، فَجَعَلْنَاكَ بَيْنَنَا ، فَقَالَ : أُخْبِرُكُمْ عَمَّنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ لَا يَصُومُهُ .
Hud bin Shihab bin Abbad narrates from his father, from his grandfather, that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by some tents at Arafat and asked: "Whose tents are these?" We said: Of the people of Abd al-Qays. He prayed for good for them and forbade them from fasting on the day of Arafah.
The narrator says: My father and Taliq bin Muhammad al-Khuza'i performed Hajj, and the two of them differed about fasting on the day of Arafah. My father said: Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) shall judge between you and me. So the two of them came to him and said: O Abu Muhammad, we have differed about the fast of Arafah, so we have made you the judge between us. He said: I will tell you about someone better than me, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): he did not fast on the day of Arafah.

وَقَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ : حَدَّثَنَا حَوْشَبُ بْنُ عَقِيلٍ ، عَنْ مَهْدِيٍّ الْهَجَرِيِّ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ صَوْمِ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ بِعَرَفَةَ .
خَالَفَهُ الْحُفَّاظُ عَنْ حَوْشَبٍ ، وَقَالُوا : عَنْ مَهْدِيٍّ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، وَمِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ أَخْرَجَهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ ، وَالنَّسَائِيُّ ، وَابْنُ مَاجَهْ .
خَالَفَهُ الْحُفَّاظُ عَنْ حَوْشَبٍ ، وَقَالُوا : عَنْ مَهْدِيٍّ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، وَمِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ أَخْرَجَهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ ، وَالنَّسَائِيُّ ، وَابْنُ مَاجَهْ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting on the day of Arafah at the plain of Arafat.
The hadith masters (huffaz) have differed with Hawshab regarding the chain of this narration; according to them, this narration is through the chain of Mahdi, Ikrimah and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Through this route Imam Abu Dawud, Imam al-Nasa'i and Imam Ibn Majah recorded it.
