بَابُ مَنْ أَكَلَ نَاسِيًا لَمْ يُفْطِرْ
Whoever eats forgetfully has not broken his fast

قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلَانَ ، حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدٌ الْمَقْبُرِيُّ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، فَقَالَ : أَكَلْتُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ ؟ قَالَ : لَا شَيْءَ عَلَيْكَ . قَالَ : شَرِبْتُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ ؟ قَالَ : لَا شَيْءَ عَلَيْكَ ، قَالَ : فَأَكَلْتُ كَذَا وَكَذَا وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ ؟ قَالَ : يَا بُنَيَّ ، أَنْتَ لَمْ تَعْتَدِ الصِّيَامَ .

It is narrated from Sa'id al-Maqburi (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): If I have eaten something (forgetfully) while fasting, what is the ruling? He replied: "There is no blame on you." The man asked again: If I have drunk something (forgetfully) despite fasting? He said: "Even then there is no harm on you." He persisted and said: But I (forgetfully) ate such-and-such things too while I was fasting? At that Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O my dear son! The fact is that you are not accustomed to fasting (that is why you keep forgetting and eating and drinking)."

وَقَالَ عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ بَشَّارِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ ، حَدَّثَتْنِي أُمُّ حَكِيمٍ بِنْتُ دِينَارٍ مَوْلَاةُ أُمِّ إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ إِسْحَاقَ ، قَالَتْ : دَخَلْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأُتِيَ بِخُبْزٍ وَلَحْمٍ ، قَالَتْ : وَكُنْتُ أَشْتَهِي أَنْ آكُلَ مِنْ طَعَامِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : هَلُمَّ يَا أُمَّ إِسْحَاقَ ، فَكُلِي . قَالَتْ : فَأَكَلْتُ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَنِي عَرْقًا ، فَرَفَعْتُهُ إِلَى فِيَّ ، فَذَكَرْتُ أَنِّي صَائِمَةٌ ، فَبَقِيَتْ يَدِي لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ أَرْفَعَهَا إِلَى فِيَّ ، وَلَا أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ أَضَعَهَا ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَا لَكِ يَا أُمَّ إِسْحَاقَ ؟ قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، إِنِّي كُنْتُ صَائِمَةً ، فَقَالَ : أَتِمِّي صَوْمَكِ ، فَقَالَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ : الْآنَ حِينَ شَبِعْتِ ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنَّمَا هُوَ رِزْقٌ سَاقَهُ اللهُ تَعَالَى إِلَيْهَا .
قُلْتُ : أَخْرَجَهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَفِي هَذَا زِيَادَةٌ .

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Ishaq (may Allah be pleased with her) that she came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and bread and meat were presented to him (peace and blessings be upon him). She says: It was my heartfelt wish to eat something from the blessed food of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him), out of utmost kindness, said: "O Umm Ishaq! Come near and eat." She says: I ate; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) handed me a bone with meat on it. I had just raised it towards my mouth when I remembered that I was fasting. At that my hand froze where it was; I could neither bring it to my mouth nor find the courage to put it down. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Umm Ishaq! What is the matter with you?" I said: O Messenger of Allah! I was fasting. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Complete your fast." At that Sayyiduna Dhu al-Yadayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Will she complete the fast now, when she has already eaten her fill? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is only provision which Allah Almighty Himself has sent to her."
