It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A caravan will come to you whom people dislike. When they come to you, welcome them and let them take whatever they want to take. If they act justly, the benefit of it will be theirs, and if they act unjustly, its burden will be upon them. Keep them pleased, for the completion of your zakah lies in their being pleased, and let them pray for you."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from Banu Tamim came and said: "O Messenger of Allah! If I hand over the zakah to the collector appointed by you, will I be free of this responsibility before Allah Almighty and His Messenger?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you hand it over to my collector, you will be free of this responsibility; its reward will be yours, and if anyone alters it, the sin of it will be upon him."

Zahir bin Yarbu' (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: I asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Should I give the finest and most precious part of my wealth (as zakah)?" He said: "No (rather, give wealth of middle quality). If the zakah collectors come to you, do not disobey them, and when they turn their backs and depart (with the wealth), do not pursue them, so that they themselves bear the sin and you are discharged of your duty without wronging anyone. Speak the truth: take what is due and leave what is false (an undue excess). Then if he takes what is due, that is what is required; but if he exceeds it and acts unjustly, then be patient. Allah Almighty will surely gather all of that for you (in the form of reward) in the Scale of deeds on the Day of Resurrection."
This report is sahih (authentic) and mawquf, meaning that this saying stops at the Companion of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
