Zahir bin Yarbu' (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: I asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Should I give the finest and most precious part of my wealth (as zakah)?" He said: "No (rather, give wealth of middle quality). If the zakah collectors come to you, do not disobey them, and when they turn their backs and depart (with the wealth), do not pursue them, so that they themselves bear the sin and you are discharged of your duty without wronging anyone. Speak the truth: take what is due and leave what is false (an undue excess). Then if he takes what is due, that is what is required; but if he exceeds it and acts unjustly, then be patient. Allah Almighty will surely gather all of that for you (in the form of reward) in the Scale of deeds on the Day of Resurrection."
This report is sahih (authentic) and mawquf, meaning that this saying stops at the Companion of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
