Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from some of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the sun and the moon are two great signs among the signs of the power of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; so when you see such a situation (an eclipse), hasten at once in alarm to the prayer before Allah."
The chain of this narration contains Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, a da'if (weak) narrator, but its content is reliable since it is established by the narrations of the two Sahihs.

It is narrated from Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) that when the sun was eclipsed in the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to the Companions): "Perform (the eclipse prayer) in exactly the same form and manner in which you most recently performed one of the obligatory prayers."
Takhrij: Imam al-Nasa'i recorded this report in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (1852), and its chain is sahih (authentic).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "I performed the eclipse prayer behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and throughout that entire prayer I did not hear a single letter (of recitation) from him (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Imam Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili recorded this hadith in his Musnad. Its chain contains the narrator Ibn Lahi'ah, who has been declared da'if (weak) because of his poor memory; however, this report is cited as scholarly evidence on the question of silent recitation in the eclipse prayer.
