It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever deliberately abandons the prayer, then the covenant (dhimmah) of Allah Almighty (i.e. the pledge of protection and refuge from Him) is surely withdrawn from him."
In the chain of this hadith there is an unnamed (mubham) narrator ("a man") between Makhul and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him); however, narrations with this same meaning are reported with reliable chains in other hadith books.

Imam Abd al-Razzaq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates through an elder of Syria from Imam Makhul (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: "Whoever has the covenant of Allah Almighty, His pledge and His protection and security, withdrawn from him has certainly committed disbelief."
In the chain of this narration there is an unnamed (mubham) narrator, due to which the chain is weak; however, Imam Makhul (may Allah have mercy on him) is an eminent Successor and jurist of Syria, and this statement of his is reported as a stern warning.

It is narrated from Imam Makhul (may Allah have mercy on him) concerning a person who says: "The prayer is truly from Allah Almighty, but I will not perform it; and zakah is truly from Allah Almighty, but I will not pay it," that he said: "Such a person is to be asked to repent; if he repents, (well and good), otherwise he is to be killed."
The chain of this report is hasan (good); Imam Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it in al-Musannaf and Imam al-Ajurri in al-Shari'ah. This concerns the ruling on one who acknowledges the obligations but refuses to act upon them.

It is narrated from Imam Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani (may Allah have mercy on him) concerning a person who says: "The prayer is (obligatory) from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, but I will not perform it," that he said: "His neck is to be struck from here," and (while saying this, the narrator) Ishaq pointed to the back of his neck; (and he also said): "There is no disagreement among the Imams concerning this ruling."
This report concerns one who acknowledges the obligation of the prayer but explicitly refuses to perform it; according to the Imams such a person deserves to be killed, and consensus has been reported on this.
