It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyidah Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the woman who suffers from istihadah (abnormal, continuous bleeding outside menstruation). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep count of the days on which you used to menstruate." He (peace and blessings be upon him) also ordered her: "She should use a cloth or cotton (to hold back the blood), perform the prayer, and take the ritual bath (ghusl) each time she attains purity (that is, when the days of menstruation end)."
Takhrij: Musnad Abi Ya'la, hadith no. 203. This hadith is sahih (authentic) by virtue of supporting reports; Imam Ibn Hibban declared it sahih.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "She (the woman, to determine her days of menstruation) should wait five, seven, eight, nine and ten days; then when the period of ten days has passed (and the blood has not stopped), she is called mustahadah (that is, a woman suffering from istihadah)."
The chain of this report contains a narrator named al-Jald bin Ayyub, who is da'if (weak); Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal and Yahya bin Ma'in (may Allah have mercy on them both) declared him weak. However, this report is cited in support of the position of some jurists that the maximum length of menstruation is ten days.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Shihab al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) that "the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) to take the ritual bath (ghusl) for every prayer, because she was afflicted with istihadah (a condition in which blood keeps flowing outside the days of menstruation)."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: The narrator Layth bin Abi Sulaym in the chain of this narration is da'if (weak). Umm Habibah here means Sayyidah Umm Habibah bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), and this hadith about her is originally found in the books of Sunan with a connected chain.
