It is narrated from Imam al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the people during the days of Hajj and said: O people, we have witnessed the era of the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), we have acquired knowledge from them directly, and they narrated this hadith to us that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fast on sighting the moon and break the fast on sighting it; then, if (because of clouds) the horizon is not clear to you and the moon stays hidden, complete the count of thirty days; and if two upright witnesses testify (to having sighted the moon), then fast on the basis of their sighting, break the fast on its basis, and refrain (from eating and drinking, acting upon the rulings of fasting) accordingly."
