قَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ هُوَ ابْنُ هَارُونَ ، أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو هِلَالٍ الرَّاسِبِيُّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : مَا كَرُمَ عَبْدٌ عَلَى اللهِ تَعَالَى إِلَّا ازْدَادَ عَلَيْهِ الْبَلَاءُ شِدَّةً ، وَلَا أَعْطَى عَبْدٌ صَدَقَةَ مَالِهِ فَنَقَصَتْ ، وَلَا أَمْسَكَهَا فَزَادَتْ فِي مَالِهِ ، وَلَا سَرَقَ سَارِقٌ إِلَّا حُسِبَ مِنْ رِزْقِهِ .
It is narrated from Ka'b al-Ahbar (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: "Whenever a servant's rank and standing increase in the court of Allah, Glorified and Exalted, the severity of the trials that come upon him is also increased; and it has never happened that a servant gave charity from his wealth and his wealth was truly decreased by it; nor did anyone hold back his wealth out of miserliness and his wealth increased because of it; and whenever a thief steals, that wealth is counted as part of his already decreed provision."
