It is narrated from Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) asked a man about his camels, and he mentioned their emaciation and the sores on their backs. At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I had thought that they would be big, strong and fat." Then, on one occasion, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by that man while he was driving his camels and reciting these verses: 'Aqsama billahi Abu Hafsin Umar, ma inna biha min naqabin wa la dabar, faghfir Allahumma in kana fajar', meaning: Abu Hafs Umar swore by Allah that there is no wound on the soles of these camels nor any sore on their backs; so, O Allah, if he has sinned in this matter (by stating what is untrue), forgive him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What is this about?" He said: The Commander of the Faithful asked me about the state of my camels and I informed him, but he thought that they were very fat and healthy, whereas they are as weak as you see. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I myself am the Commander of the Faithful, Umar. Come to me at such and such a place." So the man came, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that those sick camels be taken into public custody, and in exchange gave him healthy camels from the zakah camels of the treasury (bayt al-mal).
