It is narrated from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said (concerning those who withheld zakah): "By Allah! If these people refuse to give me even a single rope for tying a camel which they used to give to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (as zakah), I will fight them even for that rope." And he (may Allah be pleased with him) used to take, along with the camel, the rope for tying its legs as well. Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this blessed verse: "Muhammad is no more than a messenger; messengers have passed away before him" (Surah Al Imran: 144).
I (Ibn Hajar) say: This report is mursal, but its chain is hasan (good), and the hadith scholars have recorded its basis with a connected chain as well. I have mentioned it here only for the additional benefit that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) used to take the rope along with the camel, because this supports the narrators who reported the word 'iqal' (rope) in the well-known hadith, as opposed to those who reported the word 'anaq' (young goat).
