وَقَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ أَبِي اللَّيْثِ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ الْأَعْوَرُ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْهُذَلِيِّ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِلْحَسَنِ : كُنَّ نِسَاءُ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ يَصْنَعْنَ مَا يُصْنَعُ الْيَوْمَ ؟ قَالَ : لَا ، هَا هُنَا خَمْشُ وُجُوهٍ ، وَشَقُّ جُيُوبٍ ، وَنَتْفُ أَشْعَارٍ ، وَمَزَامِيرُ شَيْطَانٍ ، صَوْتَانِ قَبِيحَانِ فَاحِشَانِ : عِنْدَ هَذِهِ النِّعْمَةِ ، ذَكَرَ اللهُ تَعَالَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَقَالَ : فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَعْلُومٌ لِلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ ، وَجَعَلْتُمْ فِي أَمْوَالِكُمْ حَقًّا مَعْلُومًا لِلْمُغَنِّيَةِ عِنْدَ هَذِهِ النِّعْمَةِ ، وَالنَّائِحَةِ عِنْدَ الْمُصِيبَةِ ، يَمُوتُ الْمَيِّتُ عَلَيْهِ الدَّيْنُ وَعِنْدَهُ الْأَمَانَةُ ، وَيُوصِي الْوَصِيَّةَ ، فَتَأْتِي الشَّيْطَانُ أَهْلَهُ فَيَقُولُ : وَاللهِ لَا تُنْفِذُونَ لَهُ تَرِكَةً ، وَلَا تَرُدُّونَ لَهُ أَمَانَةً ، وَلَا تَقْضُونَ دَيْنَهُ ، وَلَا تُمْضُونَ وَصِيَّتَهُ ، حَتَّى تَبْدَؤُوا بِحَقِّي ، فَيَشْتَرُونَ ثِيَابًا جُدُدًا ، ثُمَّ تُشَقُّ عَمَلًا ، وَيَجِيئُونَ بِهَا بِيضًا ، ثُمَّ تُصْبَغُ ، ثُمَّ يُحَلَّقُ لَهَا سُرَادِقُ فِي دَارِهِ ، فَيَأْتُونَ بِأَمَةٍ مُسْتَأْجَرَةٍ تَبْكِي بِعَيْنٍ شَجْوَهَا ، وَتَبْتَغِي عَبْرَتَهَا بِدَرَاهِمِهِمْ ، وَمَنْ دَعَاهَا بَكَتْ لَهُ بِأَجْرٍ مُعَيَّنٍ ، تُغَنِّي أَحْيَاءَهُمْ فِي دُورِهِمْ ، وَتُؤْذِي أَمْوَاتَهُمْ فِي قُبُورِهِمْ ، تَمْنَعُهُمْ أَجْرَهُمْ بِمَا يُعْطُونَهَا مِنْ أَجْرِهَا ، وَمَا عَسَى أَنْ تَقُولَ النَّائِحَةُ ؟ تَقُولُ : يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، إِنِّي آمُرُكُمْ بِمَا نَهَاكُمُ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، أَلَا إِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى أَمَرَكُمْ بِالصَّبْرِ ، وَأَنَا أَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَصْبِرُوا ، وَإِنَّ اللهَ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - نَهَاكُمْ عَنِ الْجَزَعِ ، وَأَنَا آمُرُكُمْ أَنْ تَجْزَعُوا ، فَيُقَالُ : اعْرِفُوا لَهَا حَقَّهَا ، فَيُبَرَّدُ لَهَا الشَّرَابُ ، وَتُكْسَى الثِّيَابَ ، وَتُحْمَلُ عَلَى الدَّوَابِّ ، فَإِنَّا لِلهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ ، مَا كُنْتُ أَحْسَبُنِي أَنْ أَكُونَ فِي أُمَّةٍ هَذَا فِيهِمْ .
Abu Bakr al-Hudhali (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Imam Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him): "Did the women of the Muhajirun also do what the women of today do?" He said: "No. Today faces are scratched, collars are torn, hair is plucked out, and the instruments of Satan are played. Two utterly ugly and indecent voices are raised, at times of joy and at times of calamity. Allah Almighty, praising the believers, said: 'And in their wealth is a known right for the one who asks and the one who is deprived', yet you have made in your wealth a fixed right for the singing woman at times of joy and for the wailing woman at times of calamity. The deceased dies while he owes a debt, holds a trust, and has made a bequest; then Satan comes to his family and, as it were, says: 'By Allah, you will not distribute his estate, nor return his trust, nor pay his debt, nor carry out his bequest, until you first give me my due.' So they buy new clothes, then deliberately tear them; they bring white clothes and dye them; they put up a canopy in the house for this wailing woman, and they call a hired slave-girl or woman who weeps with feigned grief and seeks out her tears in exchange for their dirhams. Whoever calls her, she weeps for him for a fixed fee; she sings for their living in their homes and torments their dead in their graves, and because of the fee given to her she deprives them of their reward. The wailing woman, as it were, says to the people: 'I command you to do the very thing Allah has forbidden you; Allah has commanded you to be patient and I forbid you from patience, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has forbidden you from impatience while I command you to be impatient.' Then it is said: 'Recognise her right'; so drinks are cooled for her, she is given clothes to wear, and she is mounted on a riding animal. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return)! I never thought I would live in a nation in which all this would be found."
