It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Indeed, the piece of wood that is in the maqsurah (the special enclosure of the Prophet's Mosque): the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lean on it when he stood (for prayer or the sermon). Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, that wood was stolen. So it was searched for, and it was found in the mosque of Banu Amr bin Awf. By then termites had (eaten it from inside and) hollowed it out. So, to preserve it, two planks of wood were carved and hollowed out from inside; then both planks were fitted over that (blessed wood) and closed; then the two pieces of wood were joined onto it like a patch. So now, when you see it, you clearly see that joint in it."
The chain of this narration is hasan (good), and Imam Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah recorded it in his Musannaf.
