It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the sermon on Friday leaning against the trunk of a date palm. It was said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah! The number of people has now increased, and they love to see you; so if you were to have a pulpit made on which you stand, all the people would be able to see you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Very well; who will make this pulpit for us?" A man stood up and said: "I will make it." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "You will make it?" He said: "Yes." But he did not say 'In sha Allah' (if Allah wills). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his name and he told him his name; he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down." So he sat. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the same question again, and another man stood up and gave the same answer, but he did not say 'In sha Allah' (if Allah wills) either; he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him too to sit down. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated the same question a third time, and another man stood up and said: "I will make it." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "You will make it?" He said: "Yes, In sha Allah (if Allah wills)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his name, and he said: "My name is Ibrahim." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Make it." So when Friday came and the people gathered, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit, settled upon it and faced the people, that old trunk began to weep and wail so that its sound reached me although I was in the last part of the mosque. The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit and embraced it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept comforting it until it calmed down. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went back up onto the pulpit, and after praising and extolling Allah Almighty he said: "Indeed, this palm trunk wept only out of longing and yearning for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) because of being separated from him. By Allah! Had I not come down from the pulpit and embraced it, it would have kept sobbing like this until the Day of Resurrection."
And Abu Bakr narrated that Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the sermon leaning on a trunk. Then a Roman man came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I will make a pulpit for you on which you can deliver the sermon. So he made this pulpit which you see. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on it to deliver the sermon, that dry trunk began to weep as a she-camel wails for her young. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came down and pressed it to his chest, and it became silent; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that the ground be dug and it be buried.
And Abu Ya'la narrated it through the chain of Masruq bin al-Marzuban, at the end of which are these words: When the next day came, I saw that its place had been changed. I asked: "What is this?" The people said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came and moved it."
And through the same chain a similar narration, with an addition, is reported from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him).
