It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I used to ask permission to come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in prayer, he would make tasbih, saying 'Subhan Allah' (to let me know that he was occupied); and if he (peace and blessings be upon him) was not in prayer, he would grant me permission to come in."
Imam Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili recorded this hadith; however, its chain is weak because of the presence of Ubaydullah bin Zahr and his teacher Ali bin Yazid al-Alhani in it.
