It is narrated from Wasi' bin Habban that he was standing in the mosque praying, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was sitting with his back resting against the qiblah wall of the mosque. When Wasi' finished his prayer, he turned away from his left side towards Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and sat with him. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked him: "What prevented you from turning away to your right side?" He replied: "I saw you (in this direction), so I turned towards you." At this Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "You did very well! In fact, some people say that when you finish your prayer, you should turn away only from your right side." Then Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "When you have finished the prayer and are about to turn away, you have the choice: if you wish, turn away to the right, and if you wish, turn away to the left."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
