Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 517 — Raising the hands

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "Indeed, your raising your hands (in this way) during the prayer (supplication) is an innovation. By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did no more than this," that is, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would point with his blessed finger (at the time of supplication and remembrance).
Ibn Abi Shaybah recorded this hadith in al-Musannaf. Its chain contains the narrator Bishr bin Harb, who is da'if (weak) according to the majority of hadith scholars; moreover, this prohibition is reported concerning raising the hands excessively in supplication or raising the hands during the sermon.
