It is narrated from Abu al-Ahwas (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered us: "When we prostrate, we should spread our elbows and our forearms on the ground." Abu al-Ahwas said: Then I mentioned this to Imam Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said: "This is wrong."
Ibn Abi Shaybah recorded this athar in al-Musannaf (2749). Imam Tawus's word "kadhib" is used, according to the idiom of the Hijaz, in the sense of error and mistake, because spreading the forearms in prostration is contrary to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his clear instructions.
