It is narrated from Yazid bin Abi Habib (may Allah have mercy on him) that two men came to Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) with their dispute over a mere handspan of land. Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) said (warning them): I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you are in a land and see two men there quarrelling with each other over a mere handspan of land, then leave it." The narrator says that (acting upon this prophetic statement) Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) departed from there and went to Syria.
Imam al-Tayalisi narrated it in his Musnad and its chain is hasan (good). This hadith condemns unjust quarrelling over a trivial piece of land and stresses keeping away from places of fitnah.
