Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4289 — Al-Hudaibiyah

It is narrated from Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an that Urwah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said to his people at the time of the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyah: "O my people! I have seen great kings and spoken with them, so send me to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) so that I may talk with him." So he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Hudaybiyah and began talking with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and meanwhile (in keeping with the former custom of the Arabs) he kept reaching out his hand towards the blessed beard of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him), fully armed, stood guard at the head of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him (sharply): "Pull back your hand, before this hand fails to return to you intact." Urwah raised his head and (recognising him) said: "Is it you? By Allah, I am still suffering (the financial burden of) that treachery of yours which you committed (in the time of ignorance)." Then Urwah returned to his people and said: "O my people! I have seen kings and spoken with them, but by Allah, I have never seen anyone like Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) (so dignified and beloved); he is not a conventional king. I saw the sacrificial animals held back (on the way), and I think that some great calamity will soon befall you." So he and those of his people who followed him turned back from there. Then he climbed the wall of al-Ta'if and (openly) bore witness that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. At this a man from his people shot him with an arrow and he was martyred. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (on hearing of this) said: 'Al-hamdu lillahi alladhi ja'ala fi ummati mithla sahibi Ya-Sin' (All praise is for Allah, who has placed in my Ummah a man of truth like the companion of (Surah) Ya-Sin).
This narration is mursal or mu'dal. Its basic event is also narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari from the hadith of Sayyiduna al-Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) and Marwan, but this final part is not found there; and the detail mentioned at the end of this narration is an error (in terms of historical sequence). The fact is that he was shot with the arrow after the Battle of al-Ta'if, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had already departed from there; then Urwah came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and accepted Islam, and when he went back to his people with the call (to Islam), they martyred him; and after that the whole people accepted Islam.
