It is narrated from Malik bin Aws bin al-Hadathan (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him): "Where were you on the day when the milch camels of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were raided and carried off (by the enemy)?" He replied: "At that time I was at the well, doing the service of watering (the animals)."
The chain of this hadith is hasan (good), and Imam Ahmad bin Mani' narrated it in his Musnad.
