It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Jibril (peace be upon him) entered al-Masjid al-Haram and began searching (for him, peace and blessings be upon him), and he found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) resting in the shade of the Ka'bah. He woke him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, shaking the dust from his head and blessed beard. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) set off with him (peace and blessings be upon him) towards the Gate of Banu Shaybah, where they met Mika'il (peace be upon him). Jibril (peace be upon him) asked Mika'il (peace be upon him): "What prevented you from shaking hands with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied: "I perceive the smell of copper from his blessed hand." It was as though Jibril (peace be upon him) expressed surprise at this, and he asked him (peace and blessings be upon him): "Did you do that?" It was as though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had forgotten (that matter); then he (peace and blessings be upon him) remembered and said: "My brother has spoken the truth. The day before yesterday I passed by 'Isaf' and 'Na'ilah' (two idols so named), and I placed my hand on one of them and said: 'Surely the people who have accepted you two as gods alongside Allah are a very evil people.'"
(200) And in the merits of Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl (may Allah be pleased with him), the hadith of Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) has already passed, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was forbidden from touching idols even in the time of Ignorance.
