Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4214 — The Prophet ﷺ attending the gatherings

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (before the declaration of prophethood) used to attend the gatherings and assemblies of the polytheists along with them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the voices of two angels behind him, one of whom was saying to his companion: "Come with us, so that we may stand behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." At this the other angel said: "How can we stand behind him when only a short while ago he has been in contact with (the act of) touching the idols?" So after this incident he (peace and blessings be upon him) never again attended the gatherings of the polytheists with them.
I (Ibn Hajar) say: The hadith scholars criticised Uthman bin Abi Shaybah because of this hadith, and much exaggeration was done in this. The objectionable (munkar) point in this report is the angel's statement, "he has been in contact with touching the idols," because its apparent wording gives the impression that (Allah forbid) he (peace and blessings be upon him) himself touched the idols, whereas that is not what is meant; rather, the meaning is that the angel disapproved of his (peace and blessings be upon him) presence at the place where the polytheists were performing the polytheistic act of touching their idols.
