It is narrated from Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seated me behind him on the hindquarters of his she-camel. She said: Drowsiness began to overcome me (and I started to doze), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would touch me with his blessed hand (so that I would wake up) and say: "O lady! O daughter of Huyayy!" And he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying: "O Safiyyah, I apologise to you for the measures I took against your people, for they had said such and such (harsh and hostile) things about me; indeed they said such and such against me."
Another chain of this hadith is narrated from Ibn Numayr, in which it is narrated from a narrator named Rabi' (a man of Banu al-Nadir who lived in the settlement of Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her)) that Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I never saw anyone of finer character than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then the narrator mentioned an incident similar in meaning to the report above.
