It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Uhud, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left his womenfolk behind in Madinah in a lofty fortress called "Fari'", Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her) was among those women, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) had also left Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) behind to watch over them. Meanwhile, a man from the polytheists advanced intending to enter upon them, so Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him): "You deal with this man," but cowardice overcame Sayyiduna Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him) and he refused to act on what she said. So Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) took up the sword herself and struck the polytheist such a blow that she killed him. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of this incident, he (peace and blessings be upon him) assigned a share of the spoils to Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) just as he (peace and blessings be upon him) had assigned shares to the men.
In this report, Ibn Zabalah is corroborated (mutaba'ah) by Ishaq bin Muhammad bin Abi Farwah, who is among the narrators of Imam al-Bukhari; he narrated it from Umm Urwah. Imam al-Bazzar also narrated it through his chain, and the text he reports is more comprehensive and complete.
