قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ ، ثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ ، عَنْ عُمَيْرِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ قَالَ : ( شَهِدْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا بِمَكَّةَ ، وَالْحَجَّاجُ مُحَاصِرٌ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، وَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ، فَكَانَ رُبَّمَا حَضَرَ الصَّلَاةَ مَعَ هَؤُلَاءِ ، وَرُبَّمَا حَضَرَ [الصَّلَاةَ] مَعَ هَؤُلَاءِ ) .

It is narrated from Umayr bin Hani (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: "I was present with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) in Makkah when al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf was besieging Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both). Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) stayed between the two groups (in a neutral position), so sometimes he would join these people (the army of al-Hajjaj) in prayer, and at other times he would pray with those people (the companions of Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both))."
