It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came (to the mosque after the congregational prayer), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (addressing the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them)): "Is there anyone who will give charity to this (newcomer) and pray along with him?" The narrator said: Then a man stood up and prayed along with him, whereupon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This too is a congregation, and that (which already took place) was also a congregation."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith in his Musnad (408). Its chain contains Ubaydullah bin Zahr and Ali bin Yazid al-Alhani, who are da'if (weak) narrators according to the hadith scholars; however, a supporting report (shahid) for it exists in Sahih al-Tirmidhi and elsewhere.
