Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4056 — The virtue of Hudhaifah

It is narrated from Ma'mar bin Abd al-Rahman that he said: I prayed beside a man, and I was supplicating while holding a pebble in my hand. The man turned towards me and said: "O Abu Abdullah, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: When you ask of your Lord, do not hold a stone (pebble) in your hand." Ma'mar says: When I heard him mention Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), I felt a heartfelt affinity with him, and I introduced myself to him. So he began to narrate to me, and he told me that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to come in; he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. Then Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission as well and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him permission as well and honoured him with glad tidings. Then another man came, whose name I could tell if I wished; he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission to come in as well and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. At that time Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting there, and he asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), where is my place and rank?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are upon good, or you are heading towards good."
With this same chain it is narrated from Ma'mar bin Abd al-Rahman that he prayed beside a man, who told him that Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting in the gathering of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Where is my place?" Then the narrator mentioned the sense of the first hadith in abridged form.
