It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Umrah ('Umrat al-Qada'), and an agreement had been settled between him (peace and blessings be upon him) and the people of Makkah that he would not take any of the residents of Makkah out with him. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed his Umrah and departed from Makkah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by the daughter of Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), and she called out: "O Messenger of Allah, to whose care are you leaving me?" But for the sake of honouring the covenant that was between him (peace and blessings be upon him) and the people of Makkah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not turn towards her. Then Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by her, and she asked: "With whom are you people leaving me?" He too paid no attention. Then Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by her, and she implored him, but he too paid no heed. Finally Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by her, and she called out: "O Abu al-Hasan, to whose care are you leaving me?" So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) took her and seated her behind Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). When they halted at the nearest stopping place, Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "We are more entitled than you to raise this girl" - then the narrator mentioned the rest of the hadith.
Imam Ahmad narrated it through Miqsam from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).
