It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting in his house and people gathered around him, so he began reciting the Qur'an to them. Meanwhile a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I not tell you something astonishing about Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him)? He is sitting in his house, people have gathered around him, and he is reciting the Qur'an to them!" Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Can you seat me in a place where none of them can see me?" He said: Yes. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out. The narrator says: The man seated him (peace and blessings be upon him) in a place where none of them could see him (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the recitation of Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "Indeed, he is reciting with one of the melodious tones of the family of Dawud."
Imam Abu Ya'la narrated this in his Musnad; its chain contains Yazid al-Raqashi, who is a weak narrator. However, the original incident of Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari's (may Allah be pleased with him) beautiful voice and its being likened to the melody of the family of Dawud is established and authentic in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim through other reliable chains.
