Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 3782 — Surah Idha Zulzilat

It is narrated from Abu Asma' (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was having the midday meal with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when these verses were revealed: "So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it" [Surah al-Zalzalah: 7-8]. On hearing this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) held back his hand (from the food) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, will we see (the recompense of) every evil deed we have done?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever hardship befalls you (in this world) that you dislike, that is the recompense for those very evil deeds, which is given to you (in this very world), while the reward of good deeds is stored up for those who deserve it in the Hereafter."
Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated something of similar meaning from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) through Abu Bakr bin Abi Zuhayr al-Thaqafi, concerning the saying of Allah Almighty "It is not by your wishes, nor by the wishes of the People of the Book" [Surah al-Nisa': 123]. Imam al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) also narrated part of it through Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). There is weakness in it (in some of its chains); however, the chain we have presented here is sahih (authentic), provided that Abu Asma' is established to have heard from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).
