قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، ثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْقُرَشِيُّ الْأَعْوَرُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَتْنِي أُمِّي ، عَنْ أُمِّهَا ، - وَكَانَتْ خَادِمَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا - قَالَتْ : إِنَّ جَرْوًا دَخَلَ بَيْتَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَدَخَلَ تَحْتَ السَّرِيرِ ، فَمَاتَ ، فَمَكَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَرْبَعَةَ أَيَّامٍ لَا يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ الْوَحْيُ ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَا خَوْلَةُ ، مَا حَدَثَ فِي بَيْتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ لَا يَأْتِينِي ، فَمَا حَدَثَ فِي بَيْتِ نَبِيِّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَقَالَتْ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا - : يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ ، مَا أَتَى عَلَيْنَا يَوْمٌ خَيْرٌ مِنَّا الْيَوْمَ ، قَالَتْ : فَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بُرْدَيْهِ ، فَلَبِسَهُمَا وَخَرَجَ ، فَقُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي : لَوْ هَيَّأْتُ الْبَيْتَ وَكَنَسْتُهُ ، فَأَهْوَيْتُ بِالْمِكْنَسَةِ تَحْتَ السَّرِيرِ ، فَإِذَا بِشَيْءٍ ثَقِيلٍ ، فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أُهَيِّهِ حَتَّى بَدَا لِي الْجَرْوُ مَيِّتًا ، فَأَخَذْتُهُ بِيَدِي ، فَأَلْقَيْتُهُ خَلْفَ الدَّارِ ، فَجَاءَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَرْعَدُ لِحْيَتُهُ - وَكَانَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِ اسْتَبْطَنَتْهُ الرِّعْدَةُ - فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَا خَوْلَةُ ، دَثِّرِينِي فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَيْهِ : وَالضُّحَى وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا سَجَى مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَى - إِلَى قَوْلِهِ : فَتَرْضَى فَقَامَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ نَوْمِهِ ، فَوَضَعْتُ لَهُ مَاءً ، فَتَطَهَّرَ ، وَلَبِسَ بُرْدَيْهِ .
The mother of Hafs bin Sa'id al-Qurashi narrates from her mother (who was a servant of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) that a puppy entered the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), went under the bed and died there, because of which the revelation stopped coming down to him (peace and blessings be upon him) for four days. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (in a state of concern) asked: "O Khawlah, what has happened in the house of the Messenger of Allah? Jibril (peace be upon him) is not coming to me; what has happened in the house of the Prophet of Allah?" She said: "O Prophet of Allah, today has been a day of nothing but good and blessing for us (that is, apparently everything is fine)." She said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) put on his two cloaks and went out. I said to myself: "If only I could clean the house and put it in order." When I swept under the bed, I felt something heavy; I kept pulling it towards me until the dead puppy came out. I took hold of it with my hand and threw it behind the house. Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, his blessed beard was trembling (and it was his condition that whenever revelation came down, trembling would come over him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Khawlah, cover me with a garment." Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him these verses: "By the morning brightness, and by the night when it grows still, your Lord has not forsaken you, nor has He become displeased" [Surah al-Duha: 1-3], up to His saying "And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied" [Surah al-Duha: 5]. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of that state, and I brought water for him; he (peace and blessings be upon him) purified himself and put on his cloaks.
