Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 3715 — Surah al-Ahqaf

It is narrated from al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) that when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to accept Islam, he came into the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah; Allah has sent you with guidance and the religion of truth, and the Jews certainly find your qualities and signs written in their book, the Torah." Then he said: "O Messenger of Allah! Summon a group of the Jews, among them so-and-so and so-and-so (he named some of them), and hide me in a corner of the house. Then ask them about my standing and my father's, and they will inform you of my true status. After that I will come out before them and bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah and that Allah has sent you with guidance and the religion of truth, so that, seeing this conduct of mine, they too may accept Islam." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did exactly that: he hid him in a place in his house, then summoned the people whom Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) had mentioned. When they came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them: "What kind of man is Abdullah bin Salam in your view? And what standing does his father have among you?" They said with one voice: "He is our chief and the son of our chief, and he is our greatest scholar and the son of a scholar." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you think: if he accepts Islam, will you also accept Islam?" They replied: "He will never accept Islam." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked again: "What do you think, if he accepts Islam, will you become Muslims?" They again said that he would not accept Islam. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the same question a third time, and they said: "He will never ever accept Islam." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) and he came out before them, and he said aloud in front of them: "I bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah; Allah has sent you with guidance and the religion of truth, and these people know the same truth about you that I know." Hearing this, the Jews said to Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Abdullah! We never expected from you that you would abandon your religion." So they got up and left, and then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed these verses confirming this event: "Say: I am not the first of the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow what is revealed to me, and I am only a clear warner. Say: Have you considered: if this (Qur'an) is from Allah and you disbelieve in it, while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to the like of it and believed, while you were arrogant? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people" [Surah al-Ahqaf: 9-10].
Imam al-Harith bin Abi Usamah related it in his Musnad (Bughyat al-Bahith: 835); although this report is mursal here from al-Hasan al-Basri, the origin of this event is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari (3911) from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
