وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا سُرَيْحُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ، ثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى : الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللهِ زِدْنَاهُمْ عَذَابًا فَوْقَ الْعَذَابِ بِمَا كَانُوا يُفْسِدُونَ قَالَ : زِيدُوا عَقَارِبَ ، أَنْيَابُهَا كَالنَّخْلِ الطِّوَالِ
صَحَّحَهُ الْحَاكِمُ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "Those who disbelieved and hindered (others) from the path of Allah, We will add to them punishment upon punishment for the corruption they used to cause" [Surah al-Nahl: 88], that he said: "Scorpions will be added to their punishment whose venomous fangs are like long, towering date palms."
