وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى ، ثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، حَدَّثَنِي فِرَاسٌ ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ قَالَ : إِنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَرَأَ : إِنَّ مُعَاذًا كَانَ أُمَّةً قَانِتًا لِلهِ حَنِيفًا ، فَقَالَ فَرْوَةُ بْنُ نَوْفَلٍ : نَسِيَ إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : مَا نَسِيتُ ، إِنَّا كُنَّا نُشَبِّهُهُ بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ .
وَسُئِلَ عَبْدُ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ الْأُمَّةِ قَالَ : مُعَلِّمُ الْخَيْرِ . وَسُئِلَ عَنِ الْقَانِتِ ، قَالَ : الْمُطِيعُ لِلهِ تَعَالَى وَرَسُولِهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
وَسُئِلَ عَبْدُ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ الْأُمَّةِ قَالَ : مُعَلِّمُ الْخَيْرِ . وَسُئِلَ عَنِ الْقَانِتِ ، قَالَ : الْمُطِيعُ لِلهِ تَعَالَى وَرَسُولِهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
It is narrated from Masruq that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), (describing the virtue of Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him)), recited this verse: "Indeed, Mu'adh was an ummah (an exemplar), devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining to the truth" [Surah al-Nahl: 120], meaning: "Indeed, Mu'adh was an exemplar, obedient to Allah, and single-minded (turning away from falsehood towards the truth)." On hearing this, Farwah bin Nawfal said: He has perhaps forgotten; (in the actual verse it is) "Indeed, Ibrahim" (peace be upon him, that is mentioned as being an ummah). At this, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I have not forgotten; rather, we used to liken him to Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) (because of his praiseworthy qualities)."
And when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the meaning of the word "al-ummah", he said: "One who teaches people goodness." And when he was asked about "al-qanit", he said: "One who is completely obedient and submissive to Allah Almighty and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)."
And when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the meaning of the word "al-ummah", he said: "One who teaches people goodness."
